The Viking Age (793 - 1066) is the period that follows the Germanic Iron Age, in which Scandinavian Norsemen, the Vikings, explored and expanded their territory through trade and conquest. Based upon, amongst other things, the archaeological evidence, it is believed that the population of the area now occupied by Denmark was around 500,000 in the year 800 AD. This steadily increased until the 1200s, when the population reached c. 1 million.
